Tourism is envisaged to be a primary economic activity in the future. Oranjemund is ideally located between Namibia and South Africa, has a unique edge being located in a Tsau //Khaeb National park, and has an 80-year innovative diamond story to show an tell. While OMDis works with key stakeholders to unlock the concession and access to the park, OMD 2030, with OMDis support, is developing grassroots tourism activities, like designated walks around town and the river, training up local guides, investing in e-bikes as a way for a tourist to experience the town, and our local museum will be renovated to be an Oranjemund Historic Centre.
Some other activities that have taken off is the building of privately owned guesthouses, opening of eateries and unique sundowner offering on a boat on the river or in the dunes. Since the opening of town the flow of tourist through the town has been incredible, and at time accommodation is a real problem. The big is opportunities is for a franchise to establish themselves in Oranjemund first. Now is the opportunity for these huge, mostly empty houses to be turned into AirBnBs, or to be converted into self catering units. Opportunity beckons!
