Part of OMDis’ mandate is to assist existing businesses to reach their full potential. OMDis partnered with Namdeb to empower the local tailor industry to produce 7000 masks for the Namdeb employees and their families.
With Covid-19, we are living in unprecedented times where the new normal is to protect ourselves against the corona virus. We do this by washing our hands regularly, wearing a mass and practicing social distancing. Therefore, this project was started to do two things, to plug some leaks of money out of the local economy through people buying masks elsewhere, and to empower the tailor industry through capacitating the tailors with the input material to produce the masks. This project also aimed to mentor the tailors and networking to learn from each other.
OMDis ran an advert locally to solicit local tailors to take part in the local production of face masks. Three tailors who happened to be woman where chosen after an adjudication process of the samples submitted based on quality and workmanship. The total cost of the project is N$168 000.00. This project indeed assisted the woman to become more confident in their trade and this will open more doors as they proved that that they can produce products locally when capacitated.
